Where to Begin?

what is the best place to sell teaching resources

Looking to start selling? Not sure what is value for money or the better platform? We look at what’s available for Australian Teachers who wish to either start their journey or choose another marketplace to extend their reach.

Firstly though, what is a teachers marketplace?

The ability for teachers to sell worksheets, activities, lesson plans, classroom decor etc is a relatively new concept, especially here in Australia. Beginning just over a decade ago in the US, there are a few different marketplaces available across the world.

Teachers have managed to earn from a few hundred dollars a month to others starting a whole business developing and designing teaching resources.

Teachers simply upload a PDF, Word Document, PowerPoint, Video, or any other file type to their chosen marketplace. They then receive a payment every time another teacher makes a purchase. This is the key feature for setting up a Seller Profile for many Teachers. Once a resource is uploaded, you can receive a sale at any time, on any day. For any time poor people out there, this is certainly appealing.

Am I Too Late to Start Selling Teaching Resources?

While it can be quite a flooded environment, especially in the US and UK markets, Australia has very little competition. Selling resources online has become a multi million dollar industry, so it is never too late to start. It’s like asking is YouTube worthwhile, or should I have started a TV show in the 60s?

There are over 500 000 teachers in Australia, and a large number of “unknown” casual and relief teachers. Currently, there are only two teacher marketplaces that cater specifically to Australian teachers. There is only one marketplace, even internationally, where teachers can sell to both their peers and students. In Australia, that’s another audience of nearly 4 million students.

The hardest part is knowing what resources to sell, what your niche is, and the finer details. Like the famous quote says, “a journey of a thousand downloads begins with your first upload.” Ok. Maybe it didn’t say that specifically, but you get the point. You will never know if you don’t actually upload anything. There are many tutorials for all platforms on how to design your resources. Remember, whatever you upload and start selling, in 12 months you will be looking to update them anyway. The feeling you get from your first purchase though, priceless!!

So let’s look into the 4 main Teacher marketplaces.

Teachers Pay Teachers

www.teacherspayteachers.com

Founded by a New York City Primary school teacher, Teachers Pay Teachers arguably led the charge for teachers to share and sell resources. Although international, TpT is very much US based where the culture of buying and selling is much more prevalent. Resources are for all grades and age groups, although there is a large number of Primary resources. To begin with,  sellers must first upload a free resource before they can start receiving an income.

TES Australia

https://www.tes.com/en-au/teaching-resources

TES, a UK based company, is more than a resource sharing site. It has employment opportunities, news, and training courses. It has a very confusing payment system depending on the number of sales and the number of paid resources. The site is for all grades and ages with a reasonable mix between Secondary and Primary. There is a TES Australia site, however, you will need to search for relevant resources as it does not clearly identify what is Australian and what is UK based.

The Wheel

The Wheel is an easy to use, multi featured platform for teacher sellers

www.thewheeledu.com

Founded by an Australian Secondary teacher, it is the only site in Australia, or internationally, that enables selling directly to students and educators. This is beneficial for tutors and ex-students who want to help the next cohort achieve success. Resources are for all grades and levels from Primary to Secondary, educators to students.

A unique feature no other marketplace provides is the ability to embed resources on to your own personal blog site (saving a lot of time and effort), as well as their Valet Service. This is the opportunity to have every resource from an existing marketplace (like TeacherspayTeachers or TES), copied onto The Wheel including their seller profile set up and becoming a featured seller. This can possibly save some Teacher Sellers days and days of work, especially those with several hundred resources.

What’s best?

Like most things, there isn’t necessarily a clear winner. Teachers Pay Teachers has been around the longest and has a large audience. This also means it is very crowded (with over 3 million resources) and difficult to make your resources stand out from the rest. Its recent fee restructure has meant that many teachers are leaving the platform and either trialing other platforms or setting up their own sites. This latter step is only recommended once you have a very large following.

TES, although large, is trying to be too many things. The membership system, although free, is cumbersome. The push to have a lot of paid resources and no free resources has led to many complaints of work being stolen and uploaded to increase a seller’s commission. Copyright issues on TES are rampant!

Bang for buck, The Wheel wins due to being for all age groups and has the added advantage of allowing members to share directly with students. Being a relatively new marketplace (beginning in 2017), it is still building it’s popularity. The Valet Feature and embedding on personal blog sites are certainly game changers as The Wheel lives up to the idea of “Designed for Sellers, made for Teachers.” For those that want to set up their own blog sites and share their resources, there is no need to pay for transactions and specialty websites due to being able to simply embed a live version on your own site. This will mean you can spend more time worrying about your blog. It also helps more people find you, because in the description of your resources, you can provide a link to your blog!

The one size fits all approach of The Alphabet Tree may also be more to your liking. It’s simple with less features and may not be a bad place to initially start your journey.

Again, it is recommended if you wish to turn your side hustle into a business, to use more than one marketplace. The difficulty with using more than one site is making sure they are updated equally and promoting both on your social media channels.

Good luck.
